Dental Implants and Important Considerations

Nowadays, as the economy continues to develop, the demand for beauty and aesthetics is also constantly increasing. Beauty has always been one of the top concerns that people pay the most attention to. Dental restoration and cosmetic dentistry are no exception.

1. What is Dental Implant (Tooth Replacement)?

Tooth replacement can be understood as the process of restoring a natural tooth that has been severely damaged and cannot be treated, or has been lost, through dental techniques.

Tooth loss can cause many difficulties in daily eating as well as negatively affect facial aesthetics. Dental prosthetics help fill the missing tooth gap with an artificial tooth (which can be made of resin, metal, or porcelain). This not only makes chewing more convenient but also helps you regain confidence in communication and daily work.

2. In Which Cases Should You Get Dental Implants (Artificial Teeth)?

The oral cavity is the first part of the digestive system, with the main function of grinding food, thereby supporting smooth digestion. Therefore, dental implants are extremely necessary if you unfortunately lose a tooth. In addition, your teeth also play an important role in speech production, which means tooth loss may partly affect the way you speak. That’s why replacing missing teeth should be done as soon as possible.

You should consider dental implants if you encounter any of the following conditions:

  • Missing one or several teeth

  • Sparse teeth with large gaps, making chewing difficult and affecting aesthetics

  • Teeth that are chipped, fractured, or severely discolored

  • Teeth with severe decay that cannot be treated by other dental methods

However, there are certain cases where dental implants are not recommended, such as:

  • Children under 16 years old

  • Pregnant women

  • People with chronic illnesses, congenital heart disease, neurological disorders, cancer, or bleeding disorders

  • Heavy smokers

3. How Many Types of Dental Implants Are There?

Currently, in Vietnam, the most common methods of tooth replacement include: removable dentures, dental bridges, and dental implants.

Tooth Replacement with Removable Dentures
Removable dentures are the most traditional prosthodontic method used to fill the gaps caused by missing teeth. They are artificial teeth made from materials such as dental resin, metal, or porcelain. The denture base can be fabricated from hard or flexible acrylic, allowing patients to wear and remove them easily.

Currently, in Vietnam, the most common tooth replacement methods include removable dentures, dental bridges, and dental implants.

This method is suitable for people who have lost multiple teeth, a group of teeth, or even an entire arch of teeth, with a relatively low cost.

Tooth Replacement with Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are the most common method in restorative dentistry, using artificial crowns made of metal or porcelain. These artificial crowns form a fixed unit, with supporting abutments on both sides and the replacement tooth in the middle. This method is typically applied to patients who have lost one or a few teeth.

Dental Implants

Implant placement is considered the most advanced method in restorative dentistry, as it helps restore both the tooth root and the crown. Dental implants can be used to replace missing teeth in any position and are suitable for almost all patients in need of restoration. However, this method is relatively expensive.

4. What is the Procedure for Dental Crown Placement?

  • Step 1: The dentist examines and measures the jawbone, the gap on the dental arch, and takes an impression of the teeth.

  • Step 2: Send color data to the laboratory for analysis.

  • Step 3: A dental technician designs and fabricates the most compatible prosthetic teeth based on the analyzed technical specifications.

  • Step 4: Place a temporary crown for 2–3 days while waiting for the permanent crown to be made.

  • Step 5: Test the framework and apply porcelain to ensure the crown fits precisely with the prepared tooth.

  • Step 6: Cement the custom-made porcelain crown onto the patient’s tooth.

  • Step 7: Perform a final check for bite force, durability, and balance among the teeth.

5. How Much Does Dental Implantation Cost?

The cost of artificial tooth replacement depends on the method you choose as well as the specific number of teeth that need to be restored.
